Advocacy & Influence
Canary Wharf Group are signatories of Contractors Declare Climate and Biodiversity Emergency.
CWG are taking action to address our climate challenges and are founding signatories of the UK Contractors Declare movement, as well as signatories of the COP26 Business Call to Action.
CWG is in a unique position as they are responsible for the design, construction and operation of their buildings. This has allowed them to think holistically about whole life carbon. They conduct embodied carbon assessments for new commercial developments to minimise the carbon associated with the construction of their buildings, and work with tenants to ensure buildings are fitted out and managed responsibly.
CWG actively engage with their tenants on initiatives such as their Breaking the Plastic Habit campaign, which saw CWG being recognised as the world’s first commercial centre to be awarded plastic free communities status by Surfers Against Sewage. They have expanded this thinking to review the total carbon balance across their estate, and the impact of biodiversity. Their 10 year Biodiversity Action Plan surpasses the New London Plan requirements to provide a net gain to the environment and enhance climate resilience.
CWG’s commitment is built on strong foundations, with their sustainability report being externally verified by Bureau Veritas, and their energy management system certified under ISO50001. They participate in the UKGBC’s Contractor Forum, and the SCSS’s Construction Leadership Group, as well as being active with national campaigns and conferences on climate change mitigation.
