Better Buildings Partnership Commitment

Advocacy & Influence

Canary Wharf Group has had a long standing commitment to minimise the environmental impact of its operations. We are in a unique position, being responsible for the design, construction and operation of our buildings and this has allowed us to think holistically about whole life carbon emissions. Verification of this is important to us, and we have 71 BREEAM rated buildings, the first certified in 2000. We run embodied carbon assessments for new commercial developments to minimise the carbon associated with the construction of our buildings, and work with tenants to ensure buildings are fitted out and managed responsibly.

We aspire to be the world’s leading circular economy. We actively engage with our tenants on initiatives such as our Breaking the Plastic Habit campaign, which saw Canary Wharf Group being recognised as the world’s first commercial centre to be awarded plastic free communities status by Surfers Against Sewage.

We are expanding this thinking to review the total carbon balance across our estate, and the impact of the estates biodiversity. As part of our 10 year Biodiversity Action Plan we have surpassed New London Plan requirements to provide a net gain to the environment and enhanced climate resilience.

Our commitment is built on strong foundations, with our sustainability report being externally verified by Bureau Veritas, and our energy management system certified under ISO50001. We participate in the UKGBC’s Contractor Forum, and the SCSS’s Construction Leadership Group, as well as being active with national campaigns and conferences on climate change mitigation.
